Hope springs eternal each year when the Kentucky Derby rolls around. There’s still time each May for a Triple Crown contender to show its worth. The mint juleps flow as Louisville becomes the center of the sports world for one weekend. 2015 brought unusual excitement to Churchill Downs. American Pharaoh blitzed the field, starting one of the most significant runs in horse racing history. Many will look back at the 2015 Derby and remember that they were there when Pharaoh took the first leg of its eventual Triple Crown win. But what are we looking forward to in 2016? Like every other year, there’s a field of great horses running, and an event worth circling on the calendar.

Kentucky Derby Betting Favorite

The new crop of horses looks just as strong as in years past. Nyquist comes in as the early betting favorite. The colt hasn’t lost a race yet, and he’s coming off of a win at the million dollar Florida Derby. Because of an explosiveness that has some supporters thinking Triple Crown, Nyquist has been installed as the early betting favorite at 3:1 at most betting outlets. Barring some race-altering news, Nyquist should enter the 2016 Kentucky Derby as the favorite to head to the Preakness with a season’s worth of momentum.

Kentucky Derby Contenders

Seasoned racing fans are curious at the trajectory of Mohaymen. The young horse won the Holy Bull and the Fountain of Youth, two races that help predict the winner of the Derby. After his win at the Fountain of Youth, Mohaymen clocked in at just better than 2:1 as the Derby favorite. Things changed, though, at the Florida Derby, where Mohaymen came in as the favorite and failed to deliver. It was billed a showdown between the young horse and the challenger Nyquist. When Mohaymen fell to fourth, fading in the last few furlongs, he also faded in the Derby odds. Where bettors would have paid for 2:1 odds just a few months ago, they can now get Mohaymen at around 8:1 at Churchill Downs. Questions abound about the horse’s performance, but some believe he still has what it takes to win in Louisville.

A host of other challenges have emerged and have a chance to win take down the Derby crown. Exaggerator helped his odds with a win at the well-respected Santa Anita Cup. He was a 35:1 longshot for the Derby before pulling off the Santa Anita win. He now sits as the second most likely choice, coming in at just less than the 8:1 commanded by Mohaymen. Mor Spirit came second at the Santa Anita, a disappointing finish for that event’s favorite. As a result, Mor Spirit watched his Kentucky Derby odds tumble to around 15:1. He makes an intriguing option for bettors who think he might regain his old form.
