Are Private Jets Safe As A Travel Option?

The aviation industry continues to grow as air travel becomes more common. However, with this popularity comes longer lines, packed flights, and busy airports – which is why many choose private flights. And that’s why private jets are growing in the market.

However, many people wonder about the safety of private flights and private jets in specific. Here are a few factors to bear in mind when considering the safety of flying private.

Are Private Jets Safe?

Private jets are held to a high standard to ensure the safety of passengers, pilots, and crews. Here are a few of the ways private jet safety is ensured:

Misconceptions & Publicity:

Because of media coverage, people may believe that private jets are more dangerous than commercial planes. This is largely the result of media sensationalization when there is an incident involving a private jet or plane or helicopter.

Often, passengers on private jets are public figures, which means any incidents involving them are more widely publicized than commercial plane issues. But, the best way to truly understand safety, is to look at the numbers.

There are many ways to compare statistics, but in the last 15 years, there have been more passenger fatalities on commercial flights than on private or charter aircraft. So, though all flying is quite safe, a private flight is safer in many ways.

Fewer Passengers & Lighter Flights

Think of this as a luxury car versus a semi – which do you think has more mechanical issues over its lifetime? Probably the one that is driven more, further, and pulls a heavier load.

The average commercial plane flies as many passengers as they can for profit’s sake, which can pose a safety hazard. Some airlines might try to fly as many passengers on as many flights as possible to increase their margins, and this could lead to cut corners on safety measures or even mistakes from overworked staff. Plus, each full flight puts more stress on the plane’s structural integrity.

Private jets don’t focus on getting a maximum number of passengers on every flight, quite the opposite actually. Plus, the lower passenger volume and number of flights also mean much less wear and tear on the plane.

Private Fights & Safety Checks

Private jets undergo rigorous safety and compliance testing that is often even greater than commercial planes, this means third-party verification of all safety and standards. This evaluation is incredibly strict, which means companies that meet the standards are extremely safe.

Vault Aviation only charters private jets that are thoroughly audited by The Aviation Research Group US – “ARGUS” – or Wyvern.

ARGUS audits maintenance records, flight history, insurance coverage, the frequency of inspections, and an operator’s ability to exceed the FAA standards. Additionally, they review pilot training, flight hours, and medical records.

ARGUS has a four-tier rating system:

  • (1) Does Not Qualify
  • (2) Gold
  • (3) Gold Plus
  • (4) Platinum

All of our operators must provide their latest records in order to be cleared for each flight. Prior to the flight, Vault Aviation will request an ARGUS TripCHEQ to ensure that the aircraft, crew, and trip meet all ARGUS standards – making sure that the trip is as safe as it is enjoyable.

Weather Readiness

Many believe that private jets are less equipped to battle difficult weather, but the opposite is actually true. Charter jets can also land at more airports than commercial flights, allowing them to change plans quickly and make emergency landings when needed with more ease than other, larger, commercial flights that may not be able to touch down when or if they need to. Some private jets can even fly above the weather, avoiding any potential dangers or turbulence.

At Vault Aviation, We Live & Work by the Platinum Rule, Which Is:

Never book a client on a plane you wouldn’t board yourself.

We value your safety above all else, which is why we use a first-rate group of safety-audited operators who comply with ARGUS and/or Wyvern safety standards.

In addition, Vault Aviation only sources aircraft from FAR Part 135 Charter Operators, and we mandate that they carry a minimum of $50,000,000 in insurance and show no history of damage or irregular maintenance.

From light jets and turboprops to heavy cabin jets, every single one of our private aircraft is flown by 2 highly qualified pilots – regardless of if it’s a short flight on a small plane or an international flight on a heavy hitter. Vault Aviation will never charter a plane with only one pilot.

How Much Does It Cost to Own a Private Jet?

Even if you are a first-class frequent flyer, you may still find yourself more frustrated than fulfilled lately when it comes to travel. With lines, delays, cancellations, waiting, more delays, and crowds – even flying first or business class is less than ideal.

Of course, there are private flight options, such as partial ownership, private jet charters or private jet cards, and – full ownership. But how much does it cost to own a private jet? And is it the right choice for you? Let’s explore your options!

How Much Does a Private Jet Cost – Initially?

Depending on size, range, model, and features, a private jet can cost anywhere from a measly $2 million all the way up to and past $150 million! Unfortunately, much like cars, boats, and other travel machines, private jets depreciate very quickly, and steeply.

How Much Does a Private Jet Cost – Yearly?

The ongoing expenses can include flight crew salaries and expenses, fuel, routine maintenance, unforeseen repairs, hangar rentals, insurance, and more. And, like the price of a private jet, this cost can vary greatly depending on usage, size, and preferences.

In general, whole ownership and the associated fees and maintenance can run you anywhere from $700,000 to $4 million per year.

Here are a few factors in determining what your ongoing costs may be:

How Often Do You Fly?

If you spend over 450 hours in the sky every year, then owning a private jet might be a good idea, but, this depends on the size you need and if your trips ever vary from one type of jet to another.

Where Do You Travel?

The type of travel you do is even more important than the hours you spend in the sky, this is because frequent ‘one way’ flights mean you have to send the jet and crew back empty often. Or, international flights or very long flights may incur much higher maintenance and crew fees. If you stay in one location for a longer amount of time, then you also have to put the crew and pilots up with accommodation for the duration of your stay, which again, can add costs.

Maintenance and Other Fees Depend on Your Jet

Regardless of how often you use your jet, or the distance you use it for, you will always have maintenance and fixes to perform as well, because, like all things, even private jets break.

However, the maintenance costs vary greatly depending on your specific jet size and features, and the costs for maintenance and repairs vary depending on where you get them down and what specific breakdown you are dealing with.

Tire blowouts can cost between 2 and 3 thousand dollars to replace, parking in a hangar varies by every location, and aircraft insurance will fluctuate depending on the value of your jet and the amount of usage and locations frequently flown to – much like care insurance.

A midground expectation of operating costs usually falls between $500,000 and $1 million

Aspen, Colorado

Aspen might be known for its skiing, but it has so much more to offer. From relaxing getaways to natural beauty, saunas, and breweries, Aspen has a little bit of everything, for everyone.

Whether you love to hit the slopes or relax in a hot tub with stunning views, private jet charter flights to Aspen are your answer, and the gateway to your best winter escape yet.

Aspen is not a large town, but it is surrounded by beautiful mountains with some of the best skiing and snowboarding in Colorado. That makes what could have been a sleepy little town, into a top-tier destination in the winter for skiers and boarders, along with those who just want to get away (without being far from amenities).

What to Do in Aspen:

  • Vault Aviation recommends checking out Aspen Mountain, as Ajax has earned the title of ‘best mountain in Aspen.’ Buttermilk for beginners and Snowmass for the more comfortable skiers are highly recommended too!
  • Conundrum Hot Springs is a great place to relax, if skiing isn’t quite your main reason for visiting Colorado. Because it isn’t all about the snow – it can be about warmth as well.
  • If you love history then visit Aspen’s Wheeler Opera House (320 East Hyman Avenue, Aspen, Colorado) which opened 130 years ago.
  • One thing sweeping the nation is craft beer – but Aspen didn’t just jump on the bandwagon recently, in fact, Aspen Brewing Company has been creating amazing craft beers for over 10 years!
  • Home Team Barbeque is just as it sounds –  a delicious, relaxed tavern which services some of the best-smoked meats and southern sides in all of Colorado. And – they have an extensive list of craft beers too.

Denver, Colorado

Denver is a great location for people who enjoy winter, but don’t want to be out in the cold all day, as there is so much to do in Denver indoors as well as out! However, keep in mind that the busiest months in Denver are often January and February.

But this makes a private jet charter to the city even more enjoyable, as you can skip all the waiting and lines. Make sure you aren’t wasting hours of your time waiting to board, taxi, takeoff, taxi again, and deplane. Instead, use a private jet charter to Denver and avoid the extra baggage fees in case you are bringing your board or poles!

Denver is not only a booming city, but it has even more to offer than its quieter counterpart in Aspen. From parks to restaurants, art to Union Station and dining in Larimer Square, a Denver getaway on a private jet charter is the perfect winter holiday.

Vail, Colorado

Vail is a beautiful, scenic area with great nature, accommodations, weather, and shopping to boot. And it’s just a hop, skip, and a jump away with a private jet charter to Vail!

Vail Ski Resort is, of course, a great reason to visit the city, but there is a lot more than skiing going on in this picturesque town. Even if the second largest ski mountain in the US isn’t your style, you may want to take a jet to Vail for a number of other reasons!

What to Do in Vail:

  • Outdoors:
    • Vail has some of the best scenery in Colorado and therefore is a great place to go to be in snowy nature. Even the views within the town are breathtaking and deserving of photos.
  • Indoors:
    • There are over 100 restaurants in the Vail area, plus amazing shopping, a movie theater, a gorgeous ice skating rink, gondolas, museums, gardens – there is even nice nightlife in Vail!

Fly with Vault Aviation on a Private Jet Charter to Vail, Aspen, or Denver for a cold weather vacation destination you’ll never forget!

Enjoy the tail-end of winter in style, with a Denver private jet charter to see the city, or a jet charter to Vail or Aspen for the slopes and scenic views. There’s no wrong choice when you fly anywhere in Colorado with Vault Jet!
