Even if we ignore the time you save at the airport in lines or waiting to take off, or how you can land closer to your final destination with the numerous private airports throughout the US, or even the benefit of being able to work while onboard and arrive less fatigued – flying privately has many other benefits that can be highly valuable for frequent flyers.

One of the most common questions we hear, and one of the first queries our new clients have for us, is “how much does it cost to charter a private jet?”

This is a great question as it can hugely depend, which is probably why there is so much confusion surrounding the subject. But Vault Aviation wants to be transparent, informative, and offer both quality and value. So, how much does it cost to charter a private jet? Let’s break down some of the factors and find out.

The Price Tag on Private Jets

Private jets are pricey, everyone knows that, with a Cessna CJ4 coming in at just under $10 million. And then there is the maintenance, repairs, depreciation, repositioning fees, and other factors that make outright ownership less-than-desirable for most.

But if you still want the flexibility, luxury, and ease of private flight, without all the hassle and cost, then private jet charters can be a great option. But many people don’t know what price range is even possible. Just like everyone knows that the cost of owning a private jet is high, almost no one knows the cost of chartering a private jet!

The Cost of a Charter Flight on a Turboprop and Light Jet:

If you are planning on going to a big game, a special dinner, afternoon meeting, or another quick trip, then you will probably want to use a turboprop or a light jet.

This is one of the most economical choices, for example, if you want a weekend in the Hamptons on a smaller plane – then you could find a round trip private jet charter on a turboprop from New York for about $7,000.

If you want a jet instead a turboprop for your round trip, then the price for a light jet may go up to around $10,000.

Light jets are an affordable option for shorter trips, like LA to Las Vegas, or weekend getaways with a few friends, in fact, the above flight course would only take about an hour and get you and your additional passengers to Sin City and back for around $10,000 as well.

As a general rule of thumb, before taxes, turboprops and light jets cost about $3,000-5,500 per hour and can hold up to 7 passengers. So, this roughly comes out to under $1,000 per hour, per passenger.

The Cost of a Charter Flight on a Midsize Jet:

Now, let’s say you are looking for a longer flight, further destination, larger plane, or more passengers and luggage – what price should you expect then?

If you want to go from Seattle to New Orleans, then you’ll have a flight time of around 4 hours. For a round trip with 7 passengers on a midsize jet, you may be looking at a price near $35,000 – or $5,000 total per passenger, around $1,250 per person, per hour.

However, if you go an hour farther on a midsize jet, with 8 passengers, your total may move to $40,000, or around $1,000 per passenger, per hour.

This means that a round trip on a midsize jet that can hold up to 8 passengers will cost around $1,000-1,250 per person, per hour.

The Cost of a Charter Flight on a Super Midsize Jet:

If you are looking for an even longer flight (6 or 7 hours) on a larger plane, then you may be looking for a super midsize jet. This could be for an international flight (from Boston to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico) or across the United States from coast to coast.

Flights this long require larger jets in order to not need a stop for refueling – which costs more time and money. These longer flights can cost you from $65,000-75,000, or around $10,800-12,500 total per hour.

Most super midsize jets carry from 9 passengers, making these flights hover right around $1,200-1,500 per hour, per passenger.

The Cost of a Charter Flight on a Heavy Jet:

Long-haul flights are best handled by heavy jets as they are more comfortable and offer the additional perks of a bigger cabin, luxurious amenities, and flight attendants.

Something like a flight from Los Angeles to London for 12 passengers would cost around $135,000 ($11,250 per passenger). While New York to Shanghai, around 15 hours in-flight time, for 16 passengers could reach upwards of $175,000 (under $1,000 per passenger, per hour).

Heavy jets can carry from 10 to 20 passengers! Meaning the range in price per passenger, per hour, can range from $1,000 to $2,000.

Fuel for the distance you travel. These prices constantly change, so a surcharge is often added to make up the difference between the projected cost on your private jet charter quote, and the actual cost of flying.
Landing fees are calculated on the size and weight of your aircraft. These vary from airport to airport and go towards maintaining airport facilities, like a toll road.
On a return journey, ramp fees are charged when a plane is parked at an airport overnight or for other lengths of time.
Airport fees are charged for managing an aircraft on the ground by a Fixed Based Operator (FBO) or Aircraft Handling Company. This includes servicing the aircraft’s toilets, arranging fuel and passenger transport to and from the terminal, and rest facilities for the crew.
Other costs of multi-leg journeys can include overnight accommodation for private jet charter crew members and their taxis to and from the hotel to the airport during stop-overs.

What’s the Best Private Flight Option?

Over the past half-decade, there has been a steady decline in fractional ownership and full ownership of private jets. This is for many reasons, but especially because there are more options now for private jet charters.

Many individuals are moving towards more affordable options with more flexibility and greater choice – after all, you may only want a Light Jet for one trip but a Super Midsize or Heavy Cabin Jet for another, so owning just one jet of only one size may not be the best option for your varied needs.

Full Private Jet Ownership

The advantages are clear for owning your own private jet – you own it, meaning you have full control over times, dates, customer services, amenities, personalized features, and frequency of use.

But strengths can also be weaknesses.

Whole or full ownership means you, fully own just one aircraft, and this aircraft has to fit all of your varied needs – for work, pleasure, long-haul, and short flights. Saint Lucia officially reopened its borders in June. Like some of the above locations, visitors arriving from outside of the Caribbean must provide a negative Covid-19 test taken within seven days of arrival.

What Was the First Private Plane? [A History of Private Jets]

For many businesspeople, athletes, and public figures, flying private is more practical (and enjoyable), but where did this begin? What was the first private plane?

The First Private Planes in 1963 – Learjet

Though flight was a long time coming, it actually started out as a private endeavor with the Wright brothers (and sister) funding the project on their own in 1903.

However, after the initial patterns and plans for flight were successful, private flying took many years to become usable, convenient, and truly able to be called ‘private planes’ for work or leisure.

In 1963, the first Lear Jet took flight. This was Mr. Lear’s iconic first private jet with the purpose of being used by individuals, providing comfort and prestige. This first flight took off from Kansas on October 7th – kicking off the race for private flight and private planes.

Later in that same year saw Dassault Falcon’s first executive jet as well, which was not only considered the peak of luxury but was also featured in “How to Steal a Million” in 1966, the popular Audrey Hepburn film.

Learjet Private Plane History

The first Learjet 23 (N801L) took flight from Wichita, Kansas, in 1963 with test pilots Bob Hagan and Hank Beaird.

The Learjet’s sleek private plane was years ahead of its time and flew like the Wright siblings could have only imagined sixty years prior.

After the initial flight in 1963, Learjet #2 and #3 were finished and tested in 1964. Unfortunately, Learjet #1 crash-landed in a cornfield, gaining publicity and deterring many from seeing private planes as a safe option. However, safety grew as the knowledge of flying, materials, and processes grew every year!

Luckily, the pilots were uninjured after the crash landing, and the plane was intact upon impact. However, a fuel line ignited and destroyed the plane after the pilots were out.

Their company used the insurance money that Learjet #1 gained to help propel them into their next endeavors until they perfected private planes.

Learjet #2 (N802L), was the first in-production Learjet and was donated to the Smithsonian Institution National Air and Space Museum in 1978. It is still on display today!

The Washington Football Team is currently not allowing fans. However, they stated that the decision will be re-evaluated if there are any improvements to the situation.

New York Jets’ MetLife Stadium

The Jets are currently not allowing fans until further notice.

Baltimore Ravens’ M&T Bank Stadium

The Ravens allowed 250 immediate family members to attend their week 3 matchup against the Chiefs, but have released no plans for further opening.

San Francisco 49ers’ Levi’s Stadium

The 49ers are currently not allowing fans.

Seattle Seahawks’ CenturyLink Field

The Seahawks are currently not allowing fans.

New England Patriots’ Gillette Stadium

The Patriots are currently not allowing fans.

Las Vegas Raiders’ Allegiant Stadium

The Raiders will not allow any fans into their new 65-000 seat, $1.9 billion location on the Las Vegas Strip.

Houston Texans’ NRG Stadium

The Texans will allow up to 13,300 fans.

Atlanta Falcons’ Mercedes-Benz Stadium

The Falcons will allow fans for the first time this season at a limited capacity in week 6.

Dallas Cowboys’ AT&T Stadium

The Cowboys are allowing fans, with nearly 21,700 since week 2.

Cleveland Browns’ FirstEnergy Stadium

The Browns will allow up to 12,000 fans.

New Orleans Saints’ Mercedes-Benz Superdome

The Saints’ will allow fans in a limited capacity.

Tennessee Titans’ Nissan Stadium

The Titans announced last month that Nissan Stadium would be open to 12.5 percent capacity. They hope to move up to 21% by November.

Miami Dolphins’ Hard Rock Stadium

The Dolphins will allow 13,000 fans.

Cincinnati Bengals’ Paul Brown Stadium

The Bengals will allow 12,000 fans.

Indianapolis Colts’ Lucas Oil Stadium

The Colts will allow 12,500 fans.

Jacksonville Jaguars TIAA Bank Field

The Jaguars will allow 16,791, or 25% of their usual capacity.

Denver Broncos’ Empower Field at Mild High

The Broncos will allow 5,700 fans starting at their October 18 game against the Dolphins.

Green Bay Packers’ Lambeau Field

Though they are not allowing fans currently, by November 1st the Packers plan to have 10,000-12,000 fans allowed.

Carolina Panthers’ Bank of American Stadium

The Panthers are currently allowing 5,200 fans, or about 7% capacity per the governor’s order.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ Raymond James Stadium

The Buccaneers are allowing approximately 16,250 spectators beginning for next week’s week 6 game.

Nothing says ‘rich and famous’ quite like a private jet. But exactly how rich? How much will a private jet set you back? A simple Google search will show between $3 and $90 million:

But that’s a pretty huge spread! And is a $90 million dollar private jet the top of the line? Is a $3 million dollar one still luxurious?

The answer to both questions is, unfortunately, no. There are private jets that go far, far beyond $90 million, and a $3 million jet won’t actually have that many bells and whistles.

But then what are the most expensive private jets in the world? What do they include? And, perhaps most importantly – what are their price tags? Let’s find out!

Let’s Start at a Modest $100,000,000 with a Boeing 757

Yes, this means the least expensive private jet on our list is still over the Google answer of $3-90 million. And it only goes up from here!

Many Boeing 757 can have a price tag of North of $100 million. But with space for up to 43 passengers, this aircraft is not only luxurious but large too. It can fly 40,000 feet in the air, ensuring a smooth ride, and is powered by Rolls Royce engines.

As for entertainment, from TV screens for every chair to a built-in movie system with thousands of movies and albums downloaded – your flight will literally fly by. And when you consider that this is the private jet Donald Trump chose, you know it has been verified as luxurious.

Now, Let’s Jump Up to the Boeing 787-8 BBJ Dreamliner at $300,000,000

This is more of a commercial-sized plane than a private jet, but it can be bought privately, making it permissible on our list.

This ultra-luxurious aircraft has over 2,400 square feet of cabin space! Including a master bedroom with a California King bed, a walk-in closet larger than the ones in the majority of homes, and a master bath with an extra-large walk-in shower and heated floors. It truly is a swanky condo in the sky.

There is also the seating, with 18 first-class seats, 6 premium economy – but the ability for hundreds! This makes this private jet more suitable for business flights or conferences, though it can be used for personal use as well – if you have an exceptionally large family.

The Luxurious (& Massive) Airbus 380 Runs a Cool $500,000,000 [Half a Billion Dollars]

This is not only the largest private jet but was the top choice for Saudi Prince Alwaleed bin Talal al-Saud – and with his net worth pushing $19 billion, he clearly knows a few things about luxury.

The Airbus 380 is a double-decker jet, and one of the most expensive planes in the world (but not quite). Even without modifications or extras, the base price will run close to $450,000,000.

This jet was actually originally created as a commercial plane, however, with a number of them being used for private use, the Airbus 380 officially made the switch from commercial to private. And with the Saudi Prince turning his into a flying mansion, with parking for his Rolls Royce, an elevator, four family suites, and so much more spanning three floors – it doesn’t seem that the trend of buying and converting commercial planes for private use is going to slow down, even though Alwaleed bin Talal al-Saud sold his.

Finally, Let’s Go a Little Crazy with the B-2 Spirit Coming in at $737,000,000!

Technically, the B-2 Spirit is a military aircraft. However, this fighter plane is vastly different than everything above not only because of its price and original use, but its design. It is smaller, sleeker, and curved, which deflects radar, making it essentially invisible.

This jet has a top speed of 0.81 Mach and a range of 6,000 nautical miles! Though it does need to be refueled every six hours and has an hourly operating cost of over $125,000.

Though luxury isn’t the main point of this jet, it does have all of the advanced tech you would expect at the price point. These include a quadruple fly-by-wire flight control system, split brake-rudders, and differential thrusts for maneuvers, all to ensure that you are nearly invisible to radar when in flight.

And sure, the B-2 Spirit isn’t used in civilian flight – but it is a jet, and it is not used publicly. So, if you want to know the most expensive private jet out there, it’s actually not technically a private jet at all!
